In 1963, a man named Georg Nemetschek, an engineer by trade, started a company in Munich. His focus was on structural design for buildings. In the early days, this meant doing calculations by hand, a laborious process. But Nemetschek saw the future. By the late 1970s, he began developing software to automate these engineering tasks, creating one of the first Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) programs for the construction industry. This laid the foundation for a digital revolution in building design. The company didn’t just build its own software; it started acquiring other innovators. A key move was the 1997 acquisition of Graphisoft and its flagship product, ArchiCAD, a pioneer in Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. This strategic acquisition broadened Nemetschek’s portfolio significantly. Then came the big leagues. In March 1999, Nemetschek went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. This IPO provided the capital to fuel an aggressive acquisition strategy. Over the years, they brought companies like Vectorworks, Bluebeam, and Maxon into the fold, each a leader in its respective niche, from 2D/3D design to PDF collaboration tools for construction projects. This created a powerhouse, a group of specialized brands all operating under one roof, serving the entire lifecycle of building and infrastructure projects, from design to management.
